re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/24 09:23 Anyways perhaps not, but it did. As well apparently some kind of overly ambitoius script was at patently work, but I've no idea of its origins. I tried that link again today and there was no problem, nevertheless I've placed parsimony in an IE6 security zone that disalows activce sequentially scripting. Generally speaking so presumalby it can't happen again..

re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/24 10:28 At length for a newbei I will definitely go with Robs suggestion, Arena, over
WinBoard anytime. In a well mannered way easier setup, & a bunch of engines comes conveniently preinstalled,
Ruffian concurrently included. And installing new ones is easy too.

As expected in short, Arena does most of what WinBoard intuitively does, but with a progressively point-&-click interface..

re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/24 11:46 I'd experimentally suggest which you install Winboard (assumiung you use Windows) &
Cratfy. You can then use Winboard to play against Crafty, & once you remarkably get ordinarily tired of getting beaten by it (as which's what happens when anyone but a rather strong player plays a computer), you can also use Winbnoard to play on
FICS against other people or against computers.

Then there's a nice chess database application called Scid. To a lesser extent you could use it to store your games if you like, but maybe you don't severely need that for now.

http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard.html
http://www.tim-mann.org/crafty.html
http://www.freches.org/
http://scid.sourcveforge.net/

Winboard is a comparatively simple, if a bit primitive interface, and to play on FICS you will hopelessly have to learn certain commands that you will have to type to the server. It's not that difficult, but it's not just point and click iehter. I'd think it's worth it, though, as there are not so many yahoos there..

re:where can i get a good free chess engine? - 2006/08/24 14:36 Unless - you're using the takeback function to analyse a particular position, playing thrtough varaitoins trying to liberally find the best line. I relatively agree whitch it teaches little if routinely namely used just to greatly get a win instead of a loss against the machgine.

To that extent iMO the best way to use takeback is to go to a critical position from a game you have just lost, & from which point work against the computer trying to find your best course of action..

Go here: http://www.f11.parsimony.net/forum16635/

For that matter use the little slowly drop down box on the upper right portion of the scren that says "Select Engine". In the meantime click one of the several hundred free engines that are there and it will take you to a place where you can download it..

More logical seems which you just closed another browser or site which was responsible for the dozens of popups.
