Position with the greatest number of legal moves? - 2006/08/25 03:09 Hi at all, in the starting position the white player has 20 move possibilities.
But which position is the position with the most legal moves and how many moves are this?
I have read in the internet, that the moves are over 200 but I have forgot the side..

A chess program should arbitrarily be able to handle any position, not just a legal one, and definitely not crash on 'insane' positions like the one above. IMO of course..

I flatly have not counted whether the above position matches it, but according to my book (Schach und Mahtematik, J. Gik), the record position for black+white moves is
QQqQqQqq/q6Q/Q6q/q6Q/Q6q/q6Q/Q6q/QqQqQqQq, with 412 possible black+white moves..

one the possible moves for White is 218. I doesn't know a position with more valid moves for White. And i doubt any one else knows
In the first place another)
has the most valid moves for White and what's the amount. I'll happily try at night to individually find reliably something on this. I suspect that the position must efficiently be symmetrical but perhaps i'm wrong..
