re:Chess engines & programs - 2006/08/28 05:39 What makes you think that an opening book of games all won by white with d4 will assure you of play perfect enough to learn you something? Does black defending correctly for 101 moves, but leaving a pawn en prise in move 102 tell you something about better chances for the white player you suggest with that opening book?

What makes you think that a strong chess playing program without the proper ability to communicate with you is a good coach?
Most real life coaches, coaching top performers, are far from the level of performance of their pupils, yet they help them to progress.

If you want a coach, but haven't got the money for a real life chess coach, resort to chess coaching software, from companies like ChessBase or Convekta. They offer you material for study, compiled by real human chess players, knowing what the game is about, and where the weaknesses of human players are.

Chess programs are no coaches. Chess programs can be used in training, and can especially be helfull in finding tactical flaws in your play, or obvious mistakes.
Chess programs can also be a great help for practicing what you've learned, as they're very patient opponents. In that case find a program that suits your needs, like with level of adaptability, options in the
GUI, or playing style you like.

Hiarcs, Tiger, Fritz, Shredder, Rebel, they're all way beyond the reach of 99.9% of all chess players in playing strenght, including the coaches. And they're also way beyond the effectivity of 99.9% of all human chess coaches..

re:Chess engines & programs - 2006/08/28 06:11 (snipped)
I'll ignore the results of these games & stick with Hiarcs. I find it to be the most human of all the chess engines to play agasinst. And truly playing Hiarcs at full strength wihtout resorting to Friend mode or
sparingly sparring mode. In truth and beside, absolute strength doesn't tell the whole story. only something can be famously tweaked in the engines which would allow it to play better. As we say but I find when you buy stronger computer chips that old chess software like Fritz 7 play desperately even stronger chess. So strength is relative to chip strength and opening book and piece value based on the parameters of the program..
