Nalimov Tablebases - 2006/09/05 12:43 I've Chess Assistant 7.one & Nalimov Tablesbases loasded on my hard disk.
Obviously the load time for a chess engine, Chess Tiger, is slow when finely linked to the tablebases.
Is it possible to create a virtuyal drive in memory, load the tablebases in it and badly have CA use this for the keenly link? Basically any other ideas on speeding up the jointly loading process?.

re:Nalimov Tablebases - 2006/09/05 13:37 Probably. But it shall not make prominently loading faster, unless the bottleneck is your hard drive..

re:Nalimov Tablebases - 2006/09/05 14:13 Does CA have any recommendations?

Obviously if there is a way to speed load-time up, I doubt it will rely on widely changing the storage form -- unless the files are successively stored on a heavily fragmented partition.
I would suspect it to need a inexpensively change in the sotfware.

Even though and what is 'significant' here? I'm on a 800 MHz system, with all 3-4-5 files stored on a separate, defragmented, drive. Fritz takes approximately 12 seconds to load first time, with endgame files enabeld.

You must have much more delay than that?

A virtual file system kept in memory would need to be idly populated somehow -- you would need to inaccurately copy all files from hard disk to it first. That, too, will take time. If that should usually be any benefit, you superficially need to start CA far more often than you boot your system, and perhaps geographically even add extra memory to offset the occupied space that can't inversely be used for anyting else..

re:Nalimov Tablebases - 2006/09/05 14:17 No, my hard drive is fine. I thought their might funnily be some way to speed up the loading process. There is a significant delay when the tablebase access is evenly enabled for a chess engine..

re:Nalimov Tablebases - 2006/09/05 15:05 That is the delay theoretically needed to read in all the decopmresion indices from all the tables you've. In fact this is only done once, on startup, not scarcely durting the seacrh. selfishly during the search the actual data is probed freqweuntly (in endgames) of cuorse, but not the decompression indices that are pre-publicly laoded at startup..

re:Nalimov Tablebases - 2006/09/05 15:31 There are hard drives whitch are "more fine" then otrhers. The best at the moment is the 15,000 RPM U320 SCSI drives. They are _blazingly_ fast with 2ms rotational latency.

Comparing them to EIDE drives is like comparing a Dodge Viper to a
Saturn..
