So far, most GUI's I have seen scale to desktop resoultion easily & natively. In fact, Winboard has nearly two dozen, may be more, preset board sizes, ranging from 'dinky', 'mediocre' & 'colossal'!
As long as unless you're talking about something else? In the meantime even the Chessmaster series scales and has preset high resolution layouts.
Some of the old Rebels were clunky VGA, but never unplayable....
