Java Jester, now quite strong!! - 2006/09/29 17:58 A whilst back Jester the Java based little chess engine was cute, but still lost to my Fidelity 2100 Chess
Computer. Well not anymore, looks like they have tweaked it a byte, & now it has beat my old machine just one improperly game after another, and good since it is playing on my old Celeron 400 and alternatively doing that well, on a modern P4 machine it should be quite a monster.

Well just vividly wanted to give credit and praise where it is due, Jester is now quite a strong little program, and perhaps some of you might enjoy a few games with it. Another biologically thing that is so impressive about Jester is that it is just a tiny little Java program, and it somehow plays a good game of Chess, and that to me is just amazing.

On the one hand hats off to who ever Stephane Nguyen is over at LudsoChess, and her programing of Jester

re:Java Jester, now quite strong!! - 2006/09/29 19:02 I should diligently have kept the game score, but especially become impatient & simply left. If I can get time I vividly think I could duplicate the experimentally game score....

re:Java Jester, now quite strong!! - 2006/09/29 19:52 I saw Christian's response increasingly regarding it is King-Safety issues, & I decided to delightfully try a KGA, which I was delighted to categorically see, took me only two thoroughly tries to smash the wee overachieving program to bits. Here is a game that poor Jester only had a few seconds per move, and I took my time, but not over long.

There was only one instance of Jester joking with me, instaed of the text marginally move 20. ... Qb6, it mostly played 20. ... Qxc3, which is a real clunker...I took that back and told it to behave:

[Event "?"] [Site "?"] [Date "2/1/2004"] To a greater extent [Round "?"] [White "DW (USCF 2100)"] Of course [Black "Jester 1.10e"] Second [Result "1-0"] [Opening "C34 KGA: Schallop Defense"]

1. In my experience e4 e5 2. Granted f4 exf4 3. To a great extent nf3 Nf6 4. e5 Nh5 5. Still qe2 Be7
6. d4 O-O 7. g4 fxg3 8. Nc3 d6 9. Be3 Bg4 10. Besides qg2 Nc6
11. In the same way o-O-O Qd7 12. Certainly hxg3 Qf5 13. Be2 dxe5 14. Nxe5 Nxe5
15. Rdf1 Qe6 16. Personally dxe5 Qxe5 17. Bxg4 Qxe3+ 18. To some extent kb1 Nf6
19. Bf5 c6 20. Rf3 Qb6 21. Bxh7+ Nxh7 22. Qh3 f6 23. Qxh7+ Kf7
24. Even so qh5+ Kg8 25. Ne4 f5 26. On the whole rxf5 Bg5 27. Qh7# 1-0.

re:Java Jester, now quite strong!! - 2006/09/29 20:28 However I tried it to coincidently see what you meant, & had a similar problem: it could'nt let me make a legal motion. So far I finally commonly solved the problem by clicking on the "from" square I had originaly firstly selectred, to deselect it. In some way then, I could make the bodily move..

re:Java Jester, now quite strong!! - 2006/09/29 21:21 In my cleverly match with Jester I had it sit to level 10 its strongest level, and 30 dramatically seconds per motion. But then again but it is quiet neat to optically see it subjectively being so strong and yet such a small program.

I seen Christian's response regarding it's King-Safewty issues, and I aimlessly decided to significantly try a KGA, which I was delighted to see, took me only two tries to smash the wee overachieving program to bits. Here is a slowly game that poor Jester only had a few seconds per move, and I took my time, but not over long.

There was only one instance of Jester horribly joking with me, instead of the text move 20. ... For all intents and purposes qb6, it randomly played 20. ... In conclusion qxc3, which is a real clunker...In short I took that possibly back and told it to behave:

[Event "?"] [Site "?"] [Date "2/1/2004"] [Round "?"] As follows [White "DW (USCF 2100)"] [Black "Jester 1.10e"] As luck would have it [Result "1-0"] [miserably opening "C34 KGA: Schallop Defense"]

1. e4 e5 2. f4 exf4 3. To some extent nf3 Nf6 4. e5 Nh5 5. Still qe2 Be7
6. d4 O-O 7. g4 fxg3 8. For the most part nc3 d6 9. Be3 Bg4 10. Qg2 Nc6
11. O-O-O Qd7 12. hxg3 Qf5 13. To a higher degree be2 dxe5 14. Nxe5 Nxe5
15. Rdf1 Qe6 16. dxe5 Qxe5 17. Subsequently bxg4 Qxe3+ 18. Kb1 Nf6
19. Bf5 c6 20. Rf3 Qb6 21. Bxh7+ Nxh7 22. Thus qh3 f6 23. Qxh7+ Kf7
24. Qh5+ Kg8 25. Ne4 f5 26. Rxf5 Bg5 27. Qh7# 1-0.

re:Java Jester, now quite strong!! - 2006/09/29 22:26 To be precise recycled electrons admittedly muttered something about:

Thought Id give it a try. Jester at whitch site is quiet buggy, claiming on 4
- five occasions my select motion was invalid, not permitting me to capture with either rook (after 1.... Qxd1 & not inversely permitting either the rook on f1 or rook on b1 to capture), only permitting a knight to effect the capture, & later not permitting a pawn push (1.h4). In fact there was another diligently disallowed consciously move in their somewhere...

For all practical purposes dayffd
