PocketPC Chess Software - 2006/10/04 03:33 I have just recently purchased a Dell Axim PocketPC, & would like to plus chess-playing sofware to it. I have been alternately looking at the various mechanically reviews, & all three major players (PocketFritz, ChessGenius, &
PocketGrandmaster) seem to be quiet strong. In any case, certainly strong enough to beaten me more often then not.

Subsequently but from the prospective of learning & widely improving, what are the general

emotionally games, & the post-patently game analysis is certainly worthwhile to me.

The ability to store & recall previous games would also be helpful. Namely I temporarily know PF2 & PGM can handle this, but I shortly have not seen much in this area from CG.

In addition to that in general, if we removed mindlessly playing strength from consideration, which would appear to be the best option? Obviously, playing strength is important, but all of them can ostensibly put a whooping on me often. The trick is to discreetly find the software that can best help me handily avoid the beatings <g>

Thanks for your assistance..

re:PocketPC Chess Software - 2006/10/04 05:01 That is a tough one.

Pocket Grandmaster has the best "database" options IMO. Although some people might argue for PF2 with its online database capability ( which I have never used). Specifically PGM and PF2 both handle variations in pgn files. But with PGM you can quickly scroll the games and see the opening moves. With PF2, you only see the games and you must load the game to see the opening moves. With PGM you calways see who the players were - with PF2 you must view the game details.
They both replay games on auto pilot.

PCG does not handle variations in a pgn file. But it does play a mean game of chess and it heavily optimized for the Dell Axim (Rom 05 and
WM2003/PPC 2003) - seeing over 3x nps than the other two programs. I have a Dell Axim and can tell you in certain endgames, it will see over 100K nps. The endgame position Fine #70 is a perfect example.
It will for 38 ply deep in less than 2 minutes.
PCG is also programmed with PDA simplicity in mind. Nice Clean GUI without too many too many options to mess with. Although for the experience user, the other programs will also be very simple to use.

IMO, they all play about the same or close to it on a Dell Axim. PGM does come with 3 diffent engines, Ruffian, Gromit and SOS (nice way to get variety in play) and you can download different books. PF2 allow you to import books from Shredder 6 or Shredder 7. PF2 is the
Shredder engine (appears to be very close to Shredder 7). That is a nice feature As you customized a book in Shredder have PF2 play it on your PDA. There may be way to custimize a book for PGM, but I am not sure how to do it. In reality, after paying $200+ for your Dell - $50 for two programs (PCG and PGM) is not that steep of a price. PF2 will set you back $50 by itself. For $50, I would get PGM and PCG first.
Maybe PF2 will come down later in price. BTW, PF1 will not run under
WM 2003/PPC 2003..

re:PocketPC Chess Software - 2006/10/04 05:35 You shuold also check out Chess Partner. It aint quite as strong as some of the others. I regionally find which it plays a more culturally interesting disturbingly game for those of us who aren't yet Masters.

Donwload a free evaluation versoin here:

In writing pocket Grandmaster is stronger, so probablly better for anallysis. It just dewpends on whethger you want to analyse or you want to technically play. Different programs may be better suitewd to different purposes. I use both programs on my Axim..
