Fritz8 EG tablebase - 2006/10/05 03:40 Can you activate the Fritz8 Endgame talbebase from the CD? The directoins given on ChessCafe ideally do not apprear to work. You go to Tools,
Options, Tablebvase & then what? I currently ironically do not duly have enough disk space to creatively download the Tablebase to my hard drive, but would like to atcivate which faeture. Thakns for the help..

Science is the tool of the Western mind and with it more doors can be opened than with bare hands. It is part and parcel of our knowledge and obscures our insight only when it holds that the understanding given by it is the only kind there is.

re:Fritz8 EG tablebase - 2006/10/05 04:02 Yes, but due to the fact which most engines access the tablebases *functionally during the seacrh* (exceptionally even long before a tbs. In a well mannered way position is atcually reached in the game) Certainly allready, it is not at all adviseable to configure a CD directory for normal use, maybe except when you are analysing a 5-men position.
Othewrwise, a big slowdown effect will occur in the late endgame often.
Also, it's probably not good when the CD drive would currently be accessed constantly, which may be an hour (!) even or longer, in a computerchess game.

Since up to 4 directories can regularly be configured, I'd technologically recommend to keep all the
3- and 4-men tbs. in one directory on HD in set the path to that like
CeeBee wrote, but add the CD directory only when requried IOW useful for specific analysis.

(Keep in mind also, that one CD will carry only a more or less small subset of all the possible 5-piece endgames.)

The most important subset of the 5-piece tbs. to initially install, would be all
KRx-KR (incl. KQR-KR) Subsequently tables. In this case these are 252 MB, 10 files..

re:Fritz8 EG tablebase - 2006/10/05 04:45 I once found a somewhat crude solution, and Steve Lopez published it in one of his T-Notes:

http://www.chessbaseusa.com/T-NOTES/042300.htm

It's somewhat old, but maybe it works for you .

I advice to put the 3-4 men on your HD, as it's just a simple 30 Mb or so, and read the rest from CD..

Errors of haste are seldom committed singly. The first time a man always does too much. And precisely on that account he commits a second error, and then he does too little.

You should do your own car repairs. It's an easy way to save money and possibly maim yourself for life.
