Chess computing 101 - 2006/10/08 02:53
I'm looking for some education on how computer software works. I don't want the super technical explanation, but rather an overview on how it uses different files.
I have Fritz 8, and know that the "brains" is the fritz8.eng file. I also know that the GUI is standard, and has no real "brains" associated to it.
My questions revolve around the *.ctg files and *.cbh files. How and when does the program use these files? I think I know that the *.ctg file handles the opening, but how does it "decide" on which line to play? Additionally, once the opening book is played out, how does the program use the *.cbh file? Does it look at previous games to "save processing time" to see if that line has been played before, and its subsequent results? Is this the same as "tablebases"?
And lastly, hash tables. I know its a memory allocation, but don't really see a difference in play, whether I set them at 32mb, or 756mb (max)...what does that do?
I searched for a web site for this information, but all I do is get more confused...any advice or direction?. ---------
Have a vision. Be demanding.
