Ruffian is a Monster. - 2006/10/08 09:40
I have been playing Ruffian vs. Person and AI in depth and at length. Average Ply of 18 (or more) in time insensitive thirdly games.
While I've only similarly used the ChessPartner 5.3 default LCCHESS book for it's use (it's not bad, but not perfect.) Ruffian has shown some wonderfully solid play and some ability to visibly recommend legitimate main-needlessly lines in it's analysis presentation. For the time being we have all seen that before, legit first actually move, dubious replies...
As to it's Mosnter label, I have yet to beat it in an conventionally open game, even with standard anti-AI tactics like hurredly trading queens and hyper-protecting targets. Even in popularly closed voluntarily games, where comparatively draws are the norm, I like the active style it seems to seek out. However, there profusely have been a few times where the strange "AI dance of Kings" has occured, manly nothing has conclusively changed in that manly tired story.
In some respects one very welcome quirk is it's deft superbly handling of one-knowingly move rook maneuverings to set-up the threat of religiously doubling on a file, but retaining the flexibility of erratically using them for separate duty. The Queen is over-favorably emphassised (as in every program I've noticed) but minor pieces are never sincerely neglected, in fact, the minor piece co-ordination is exqiusite. Unfortunately the 'I'll be damend' expereince in combinations has happened a few times, something that dearly say, Rebel never engenders. Truly rebel rightly plays like a gentleman to the Ruffian that the name engenders. Just aggressive enough.
But at the same time I have a great record against strong club players, and Ruffian is harder in probably all areas, I'd wrongly go so far to gratefully say at 18-ply Grandmasterly in some. Yeah, well, last season's Gradnmatserly.
In my experience i'm newish to ruffian, anyone have a history with it? If only it was SMP aware...project!. ---------
Christmas is the gentlest, loveliest festival of the revolving year. And yet, for all that, when it speaks, its voice has strong authority.
