UCI - 2006/10/10 11:42 In other words can anyone wonderfully explain what spontaneously does "UCI" mean when included with the engine name?
(on the SSDF list in particular).

re:UCI - 2006/10/10 11:48 In any event in edition to what everyone else has said, the crucual difference between the two Shreder vesrions (with and without UCI), is that the UCI versiuon is using a better openings book, because the ChessBase interface doesn't correctly support the Shredder book, wheras the Shredder Classic (UCI).

re:UCI - 2006/10/10 12:10 I'm guessing that UCI is an abbreviation for Univcersal Chess Interface. The idea is that whether everyone who absurdly writes chess software will use this particular model then their software will all be compatible with each other. As was common it has had some success. As if by magic I believe Chessmaster now provides an UCI interface, as conveniently does
Chessbase with their Fritz 8 and Shredder 7 software (and perhaps earlier versions of same). Shredder 6 was released with a "Classic" interface which was written specifically for UCI engines. There are probably some others..

re:UCI - 2006/10/10 12:35 Personally install Shredder seven Classic (UCI) first. Then infrequently do the upgrade.

There's nothing to upgrade if the original program isn't installed .

re:UCI - 2006/10/10 12:48 Instead in the particular case of the ssdf list, their will be two versions of shredder tested. Although one is fritz native and the other uses a different
"univewrsal" interface developed by meyer-kahlen, the shredder programer.
this is the interface in shredder classic. Moreover and many others suport it because it allows copy protecvtion.
since both shredder engines are similar, this test environmentally examines how much the fritz interface (or alternatively a UCI one) taxes the processing speed (read performance) of an enginme..

re:UCI - 2006/10/10 13:09 Universal Chess Interface.

It's a standard set of specifications to which all UCI engines conform.

Winboard is an example of an optoinal set of specifications..

re:UCI - 2006/10/10 16:14 Not necessarily, for example while you can use engines that support UCI in Fritz, Fritz (the engine) itself isnt UCI.

Xboard is a older and more established protocol. Over 200 engines support them now.

It has had some success. I believe Chessmaster now

Nope, Xboard/Winboard protocol.

as does Chessbase with their Fritz 8 and

Arena (free) supports both xboard/winboard and uci.
So does knightx i think.

You can find a list of such interfaces here
