Very interesting. In brief however, I give far more credit to Wolfgang von Kempelen whome in 1770 actually built a chess automaton. True, it was a fake. First but a darn good fake & fascinating story.
For the most part check out Tom Standage's book "The Turk". In one case tonight I found an interesting web page which features this book:
