Chess program for the Mac - 2006/10/27 15:57I've been using Fritz 8 on the PC for a year now, and love it. I looked at chess base site, and could not find a version that runs on Mac OS X. Any recommendations for a comparable chess program for the Mac?.
re:Chess program for the Mac - 2006/10/27 16:39Not really, but SigmaChess is a good & recent one.. ---------

re:Chess program for the Mac - 2006/10/27 17:36Well, this depends on whether the word "comparable" in Abe's post was supposed to mean "comparable in terms of strength" or "comparable in terms of GUI and features". If he meant the latter, SigmaChess might be the best he can find (though I'm afraid it would still disappoint him). If he meant the former, there are several programs which are almost certainly stronger.
The two strongest chess programs for Mac OS X at the moment are probably Ruffian (available from http://www.playwitharena.com) and Deep Sjeng (available from http://www.chesspartner.com), both of which are commercial. The strongest free engine at the moment is almost certainly Crafty. Other freeware engines likely to be stronger than SigmaChess are Fruit, Gothmog, Pepito and Phalanx (I'm sure I have forgotten some other interesting ones).. ---------

re:Chess program for the Mac - 2006/10/27 18:43don't compare it to Fritz, but it's pretty nice & free: jose-chess.sourceforge.net
includes the Crafty engine and can plug-in any other Winboard or UCI engine,. ---------
