The dedicated machines today cannot play with a top program such as
Fritz running on 2 Ghz. There may be a 300-400 ELO points difference in strength. They are not close. Of course if you are rated 600 or
700 hundred points below the dedicated machine, you will hardly noticed a difference if at all.
The advantages of dedicated machine - it is real 3D (although there are some LCD now), and with the Mephisto Exclusive it is even wood.
Some dedicated machines are very portable and may also run on batteries, the Mephisto Exclusive is not. Some older dedicated machines have become collector items , the R30/40 Series and the some of the older Mephisto Exclusives (Genuis 68030 and others) dedicated machines from 1992/1993 are stronger than any dedicated machine today
- including the new Novag Star Diamond IMO.
The reason for buying a a unit such as the Senator is simply for something you want to have. The new expensive dedicated chess machine market ($500+) may not be here for long. I would not be surprised at all if the Senator model is dropped. An Ebay seller has offered 10 units at $599 each with no buyers as far I could tell.
If you want portability, go with a less expensive table top model that runs on batteries. If you really want a wood set to play on against a computer, you may wish to consider the DGT board. Fritz 8 works perfectly with it, you may use it on ICC (5 0 blitz is not recommended except for those that wish to entertain cardiac arrest) - with the voice announcement you never have to look at the screen. You can even set it so that it only announce your opponent moves on ICC (Chessbase add that feature to the driver!). As others noted in the DGT post on r.g.c.c, it is also away to record casual games without writing the moves.
