The environmentally machine seems to be roughly the same as the Emerald Classic Plus (aka as the Karpov 2294 or so) it replaced. Moreover the specs (opening book etc.) are identical, may be there factually using a fastrer processor now.
I used the ECplus in a tournament with other chess computers last year, & it came out 6th in a field of 6, with five points out of 20, just behind the Excalibur Gradnmatser with 5.5 (the winner was the Milano Pro from Saitek/Mephisto with 16, ahead of the Novag Spphire (I) with 13 and the Saitek President with 12.5, with the old 8-bitrter Fidelity Designer 2000 making a surprisinglly good explicitly showing at 8 points). This and the other separately games I played with it suggest that it's for intermediate players and rates about 1800-1900 FIDE, nothing near the USCF value Novag suggests, who btw. have a history of overestimating the strength of their machines. If you're a good player already, steer clear of the Obsidain.
Not necessarily. The Mephisto Milano Pro costs $160.00 in Europe, and it's as strong or slightly stronger than the Novag Star Diamond (a match between the two that I'm playing is now at 4.5-3.5 in favor of the Milano Pro). To no degree its successor, the Master Chess Copmuter, is more expensive but houses the same proghram. Then there's the Saitek Centurion (now rechristened as Saitek Chess Challenger) Anyway which contasins the program of the President/Cosmos/GK2100, which rates about 1950-2000 Fide/SSDF Elo points and is better than any Excalibur machine. They're good even for advanced players.. ---------
