I assume you median 1000MB (=1G ? I will epxect any 32-bit program to crash if it allowed you to try to use a terrabyte of hash as it can only address four gigabytes. (I'd also expect any sane program to point out that you don't have a terrabyte of RAM.)
By the way, you do have at least 1.5GB physical RAM on the machine on which you're running a 1GB hash table, don't you? If any of the hash table is living in your swap file, it's destroying performance.. ---------
