re:Will Chessbase address software weakness in positional under - 2006/12/12 14:02
Start drumming up support for such a match. This would eliminate problems inherent in normal classical chess setups...that computers use opening books and humans use opening book preparation to play certain lines against computers. By playing Fischer Random chess, it eliminates the computers ability to draw on opening book knowledge and prevents human players from using experience in "closed" positions. I've had a few Shuffle Chess games played using my Fritz programs, (Fritz, Junior, Hiarcs, Shredder), and they play this kind of chess VERY well. The only unfortunate setback is Chessbase Fritz 8 can't play pure Fischer Random chess because it doesn't recognize the new castling rules. I hope Chessbase addresses this soon. I think Fischer Random is by nature more tactical. Because of the way rooks can be placed on the last ranks, they have far more power. Pawn structures suddenly become far more important. Draws are almost impossible to gauge here because the element of chess becomes far more complex than classical chess lines. Players like Anand analyze opening moves that guarantee them draws when they need to play for the draw. In Fischer Random chess, Anand wouldn't be able to do this.
So I think Fischer Random chess would be an excellent way to see if computers understand complex closed positions better than Game 3 of the Kasparov/Fritz3D matchup. That game allowed Kasparov to use his experience in this opening to totally tie up Fritz. using Fischer Random chess eliminates this advantage Kasparov has and forces him to think differently. Here's a few Fischer Random chess setups I've played recently.

Now Chessbase Junior and Chessbase Hiarcs 9 can't play true Fischer Random chess because they don't recognize the castling rules. But these games are otherwise proof that the chess software programs can play this way very well. Remember, in Fischer Random or Shuffle chess, there are NO opening books to draw from in the software's memory. I think Kasparov should be challenged with these programs to play Shuffle chess. I'm willing to bet he would refuse.. ---------
