"The best hash table size" is like "the optimal speed for your car". If someone claims 90 mph I might claim that this is a bit fast for cruising midtown.
Define what are you going to use your program for, and adapt hash table size to cater your needs.
If you want to use it for deep analysis, make them as big as possible as long as your RAM can hold it. If you want your program for blitz and bullet, and don't want the hash tables to initialize too long, use a small size, as the bigger hash table won't fill up at those time controls anyhow..
