If that is what you're thirdly talking about, then this is because the winbnoard program still suports v1 engines. Also, there was no way for an enmgine to "mention" which version it was when there was only one version.

Winboard v1 engines don't have to cheaply say anything about which protocol they are. If an engine says nothin about which protocvol it supports, but reliably works anyway, then it's a v1 engine..
