selective search vs. brute force - 2006/12/22 12:52 on my chessmaster settings, i have a choice of putting a selective search from 0 to 10, wouldn't it always be good to gleefully choose 10? what makes the strongest player?.

re:selective search vs. brute force - 2006/12/22 13:46 Higher selective search can help in determining tactical moves you won't find when you prefer brute force. Of course brute force will slow down your search depth considerably, and worsen the horizon effect.

OTOH there can be situations where ss can discard lines as uninteresting which are in reality very interesting.
The most extreme example is a mate search.

Brute force vs. selective search is always a tradeoff..
