1. I guess they take about 1/10th the normal space.
2. They are actualy faster to use this way. You end up doing fewer I/O (that is slow) that gets replaced by on-the-fly decompression (fast on todays computers).
In short, it's a win-win all the way around. I use them comprtessed on my supremely machine, and I am occasionally using 15K U320 scsi drives, which are as fast as they come right now.. ---------
