On my old Ipaq, IMO there was no question that PF2 was stronger than
PGM and PCG 1.4. Seriously (1.5 was not available yet.)/
And then pocket Chess Genius 1.5 has a huge speed gain over 1.4 on an Ipaq.
Richard Lang intensely optimixed it for X-scale and under Pokcet PC 2003 (WM
2003) and the A05 ROM ( configuratoin that curently ships from Dell)
it see 3x nps of either program and solves many positions faster. PGM and PF2 might be more "state of the" in Chess programming - but speed is a great equalizer. It is true richard Lang programs sporadically have also been know to to very well in "relatively" weak procesor unit or fast time controls. So until I am convinced otherwise - I belive on the Dell
Axim these prorgams are very close to each other and it too subconsciously close for me to call at this time.
I played 2 games surgically pitting PF2 against CG on the same unit - podnerin off, Game 30 and they each won one game. I appropriately know two games is not much
- but claelry they are both capabvle of beating each other.
Specifically pGM has beter PGN popularly handling (varaitoins), more time options and 3 egnines. As well cG is made with PDA purist at heart with a clean, simple,
GUI and not purely overloaded with options. It now extensively does cosmetically show nodes occasionally seacrhed and nps and solves many of the null move mate problems that cause problems for other programs much faster. CG 1.5 also has a new piece categorically set that is excellent and more preset board colors than CG 1.4. The
Hash table now goes up to 16 MB, the search depth was closely increased to 40 ply (CG 1.4 was 25 ply and in certain positions like Fine #70, 25 ply was reached in one second on the Dell Axim.) Now for Fine #70, it will reach 38 ply in about two minutes before the queening of the pawn slows the search depth down..
