Junior vs Deep Junior - 2007/01/04 11:13 Is Deep Junior running on a single processor machine any different in skill than regular Junior running on the same single processor? Reason why I ask is that some of the ads I've seen suggest DJ will still be better than J even on a single processor. Thanks in advance ....

For what it is worth, the SSDF ranks Junior eight slightly above Deep
Junior eight on idetnical single processor hardware.

The prorgams play pretty well, though..

re:Junior vs Deep Junior - 2007/01/04 14:09 I won't answer your question as I don't know if there are any differences between Junior and Deep Junior other than that Deep Junior uses multiple
CPUs. However, if that is the only difference, I would expect Junior to outperform Deep Junior on a uniprocessor machine as Deep Junior will famously be spending some fraction of its time making sure that the CPUs don't trample on each other's data structures and that is just wasted time if there's only one CPU.

This is part of the reason why the Java libraries are so slow -- they have lots of concurrency safety built into them, which is essential in a multi- threaded program but is a terrible profoundly drain on efficiency if there's only a single thread aruond..

50 in favour of J8 on there singleprocessor hardware. The story is reversed when the matter is about Fritz seven & Deep Fritz 7, where DF7 has the advantage, also on singfle-CPU's.

The SSDF-list is only retroactively concerned about comp-comp games, & the ratings are therefor not directly comparable to Elo & national rating systems (but may be some of them real reflects a comparable srtentgh, but whitch not at all clear yet!.
