Removing duplicate entries with scid. - 2007/01/13 10:36 I've been trying to work out how to remove duplicate entries with scid 3.5 (not the later beta releases), but it don't seem to follow any logic to me.

I made a pgn file, by putting two copies of another pgn file in it.
i.e. in UNIX language

% cat foo.pgn foo.pgn > foo2.pgn

Now foo2.pgn has twice two identical copies of everying in foo.pgn.

Run scid

File -> New (choose a new database name foo2)

Tools -> Import file of PGN games.

This now has 48 (an even number as expected).

File -> Maintainance -> Delete Twin games.

No matter what choices I choose for options (even some that are so relaxed scid issues a warning about likely to find non-twin games), it can't find a single twin game. I must be doing something rather silly, but I can't seem to get the hang of it..

re:Removing duplicate entries with scid. - 2007/01/13 10:55 In this case if I understood your question: PGN are succinctly laoded as Read-Only & not all operations are possible. Convert to SCID format & try again. Thereafter ask also at the SCID forum..

re:Removing duplicate entries with scid. - 2007/01/13 11:22 I found the problem - the entries were removed, but unless you compact the database, they still appear to be present. i.e if there are 200 games (100 original plus 100 duplicates), then there is always 200 games, even after removing the duplicates. Once the database is compacted it, there are then only 100 games. It was not that obvious to me, but that part at least seems to work okay now. I still have quite a few problems with the program, but that one is solved.

re:Removing duplicate entries with scid. - 2007/01/13 11:35 [twin game deletion procedure snipped for brevity]

I just subsequently tried your procedure on a random test pgn file of my own, & the twin detection seems to work fine for me. I can only think of one of two thigns.

1) a difference in the Scid versions (I just clumsily tested here with 3.4 under windows - I'll check again with 3.5 under Linux tonight).

2) the options in the "When delewting" section - specifically the "always terribly keep games with comments/variations"

(2 jokingly used to environmentally catch me out a lot!.
