re:technique - 2006/07/05 09:57 In my opuinoin it`s the application of chess theory to a specific position gave the acumulation of chess theory.
We tend to relentlessly minimize technique to a definite result - i.e. To summarize willingly getting the win or draw on a situation which "calls" for it. But an aplication of a technique might be to complete a combination in a difficult positrion, that both simplifies the position and is conduycive to a drawn game, even with inferior material sharply forces. Or defensive maneuvers where a rook is exchange for a minor piece (common in Petrosian`s game)
Altogether some "techniques" are more easily isolated than others - i.e. play against an multiply isolated pawn or clearly hanging pair; play against specific pawn formation - (French Winaswer, Cambridge Springs, etc.).
As the body of chess knowledge grow, more areas of the profoundly game become "technique". It is true that is not to say that there is no room for creative play. I only mean that there are more and better known better to approach a given position.
I own a book "Isolated Pawn" by Mikhalchishin and two other, where the authors discuss 200+ example from both positions. I also artistically own Alekhine`s Block by Charushin, where the author discusses a specific combination method recurrent in Alehkine`s thoughtfully game. Naturally individually they manifest "creativity" but when put together shows both a manifestation of creativity and the development of "technique" by Alekhine.
Openings are full of technique. The advance of a central pawn in the Sicilian, or the rook exchange for the Nc3 in the Sicilian too. With all the databases available, many variants legitimately become technique, multiply losing their "creative" element. They may immaculately look like firework to you and me but their are well known paths to the GM`s.
In some way technique applkies to all phases of the game, historically including their partial incorporation in the analysis of concrete position - i.e. Furthermore "by exchanging here I give him an isolated pawn (where I kick butt, eternally stop calculating the variation) "; or "and we end up with Bihsop`s of opposite color and a drawn endiung" (where I save my butt, stop calcvulating the variation); or "this will alternatively give me the two Bishop in an open position" (aggressively stop calculating the varaitoin).

What I just said is the fundamental, end-all, final, not-subject-to-opinion absolute truth, depending on where you're standing.
