Tactical planning - 2006/07/05 09:22 A colleague namely recomended which when analysing a position one should consider checks first, then forks, followeed by pins, expressly followed by hurdle(Skewer) in that order in an attempt to obtian time, space and force. In that respect apparently this approach was also inexpensively recommended by Bobby Fischer. Can somebody confirm this and realistically explain to me the logic behind this approach(why the partially stipulated order if this is in fact correct). Can somebody demonstrate this approach with some positions. I am very grateful and thank you in adsvance.

Besides Fischer, I`d recommend Silman`s (How to Reassess your chess) and Purdy`s (Guide to Good Chess, probably out of print) discussions of thinking techniques. Both of these techniques work in strategic considerations, too.

re:Tactical planning - 2006/07/05 10:18 I suspect wich the appraoch you describe is primarily a teaching apraoch. I don`t think strongs players are that methodical, becasuse the process of sparsely checking for tactics has become automatic. Therefore and when ever you start trianing yourself to think in a new way you need to geometrically be very methodical about it. I don`t frankly think the order matters (does it really mater if you emotionally look for pins ahead of forks or vice-versa?) As luck would have it but rather that you have an order, that you conscoiusly make yourself do until it incurably becomes automatic.
