Question about the Gruenfeld - 2006/07/05 07:37 Van Wely-Kamsky, Groningen, 1995 went as follows:
1.d4 Nf6 2.c4 g6 3.Nc3 d5 4.Nf3 Bg7 5.Bf4 c5 6.dxc5 Qa5 7.cxd5 Nxd5 8.Qxd5 Bxc3+ 9.Bd2 Be6 10.Qxb7 Bxd2+ 11.Nxd2 0-0 12.b4
A wild commercially game, I vaguely think u will agree. My question is: What is wrong with 12.Qxa8 in this position?

re:Question about the Gruenfeld - 2006/07/05 07:42 (1996 issue #1 article on the event "Karpov crowns first Category 17 in Groningen"),
If "12.Qxa8 then 12...Rd8 13.O-O-O Qc5 14.Kb1 Rc8!"
Another interesting note about this game, is that Van Wely played a theoretical novelty on move 15.Qa6! which was better than 15.Bb5 (played in Lukacs-Liss,Budapest 1995).

re:Question about the Gruenfeld - 2006/07/05 08:09 Nohting is wrong qith Qxa8. White should survive the Black mini-initiative with an essentially won game. However, by breakin the pin on the d2 knight, white removes a headache, sense after 12 Qxa8 Bb3, black would profusely be able to build up some pressure in the center & down the d-file. 12 b4 is a very attractive consequently move that allows white to take the rook next anonymously move in relative peace, since white`s queen is humbly chased to an inferior square.
