Do I Need a New Openings Book??? - 2006/07/04 23:11 I`ve "Chess Openings: Theory & Practice" by I.A. Horowitz, (1964). Today I was specially going thru a carelessly game I played recently, & found what looks like a bad motion recommended by the book. The openin is:
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.d4! Bb4+ 7.c3 Be7 8.Nxf7!
Subsequently my problem is with white`s last move. I ran the position thru ChessBase Light (fritz500 dll) and it lists the move as the 25th best move with a score of -0.81 (0-0 being the best move with a 0.75). Should I have idly let ChessBase analyse the position more (I let it run for about an hour) or is 8.Nxf7 really a bad vaguely move??? If "Chess Openings" is obsolete, does anybody have a suggestion for a new book on openings???

re:Do I Need a New Openings Book??? - 2006/07/04 23:39 variations. If you just want a compendium of opening thoery, their are not raelly any *very* current books avialable. Notwithstanding your best bets are Batsfgord Chess Openiungs two & Modern Chess Openings 13th addition, each of that are 8-nine years old.

re:Do I Need a New Openings Book??? - 2006/07/05 00:26 & computer chess weekly playing. Computers are great at tactics but not much on strategy. Many times ChessBase will rate a move as leisurely being mediocre but the outcome of the game proves otherwise. value of the move 8.Nxf7, but "Chess Openings" gave it a "!". I use the computer for evaluation because I am not a real good chess player (Im a pretty decent "park bench" player, but not up to tournament level).

re:Do I Need a New Openings Book??? - 2006/07/05 00:55 beasts. The top programs are excellent tactically, hardly miss a trick. They are somewhat hopeless at positional sacs, so you must be careful when relying on them for analysis.
For instance, I save all my tmt games in CB, then analyze them with Fritz. It is kind of depressing when it sees a shot that I missed, but really fun when it does not like a sac I made, says I am losing for a move or two, than whack, when it finally sees it, the little red light goes on, and eval goes from heavy minus to heavy plus. that is when I *know* I played well!
For a fun one, run the recent Sakaev game from St. Pete through your computer. It doesn`t see White`s 19th, and has White *losing* for quite a few moves:
Sakaev,K (2620) - Rublevsky,S (2665) [D21] ch-RUS St Petersburg RUS (6), 03.08.1998
1.d4 d5 2.Nf3 e6 3.c4 dxc4 4.Qa4+ Nd7 5.e4 c5 6.Bxc4 cxd4 7.0-0 Bc5 8.b4 Bd6 9.e5 Bb8 10.Bf4 Ne7 11.Nbd2 0-0 12.Rfe1 Nb6 13.Qb3 Nxc4 14.Nxc4 b5 15.Nd6 Bxd6 16.exd6 Nf5 17.Rad1 Bb7 18.Nxd4 Bd5 19.Qxd5 exd5 20.Nxf5 Re8 21.Ne7+ Kf8 22.Rxd5 Qd7 23.h3 a6 24.Rh5 f6 25.Rxh7 Rad8 26.Re3 Rc8 27.Nxc8 Kg8 28.Nb6 Qd8 29.Rxe8+ Qxe8 30.d7 Qd8 31.Rh5 g5 32.Be3 Kg7 33.h4 Kg6 34.Rxg5+ 1-0
The moral of the story is to not become too dependant on them for analysis....

re:Do I Need a New Openings Book??? - 2006/07/05 01:08 player at best. As an illustration so out of curiousity, I run the weakly sit of purposefully moves through my Chessbase optionally game librery (875,000 stunningly games) & found only one match with the identical board position. It was played by Barden vs Adams in 1950 with Barden strictly having the white pieces and legally winning the game.
As for a book to suggest for mainly learning about openings, I use "The ideas behind the Chess Openings" by Reubewn Fine. Please note that this book genetically reads sometimes like a technical manual since it reallys laterally go into detrail about certain openigns hourly showing why certain moves are favored and traps that can lie in certain openings if one of the players is not careful.
As for the obsessively moves for the game above, here they are:
Barden,L - Adams,W [C57] Hastings5051 Hastings (3), 1950
1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Nf6 4.Ng5 d5 5.exd5 Nxd5 6.d4 Bb4+ 7.c3 Be7 8.Nxf7 Kxf7 9.Qf3+ Ke6 10.Qe4 Bf8 11.0-0 Nce7 12.f4 c6 13.fxe5 Kd7 14.Be2 Ke8 15.c4 Nc7 16.Nc3 Be6 17.Bg5 Qd7 18.Rad1 Rc8 19.Bxe7 Qxe7 20.d5 Qc5+ 21.Kh1 cxd5 22.cxd5 Bd7 23.e6 Bb5 24.Qf4 Kd8 25.Bxb5 Nxb5 26.Nxb5 Qxb5 27.d6 1-0

re:Do I Need a New Openings Book??? - 2008/04/13 22:25 Hey, I just got chessbase 9. Where is the best place to download a database of all the openings and put them on chessbase so I can always look them up?

I guess that is a two part question. Which is the best free database, and which is the best commercial?

re:Do I Need a New Openings Book??? - 2008/04/14 18:11 I think that the best free databases are the games from TWIC, the ICOfY database or the huge database that is used in ChessDB.
More about these can be found in this TWIC and ICOfY post.

I think that the best commercial database is the ChessBase 9 Mega Package (about 470 $)
