Sicilian Defense - 2006/07/04 13:47 A week ago I posted a message, bodily looking for help with the Sicilain Defgense - basically, my problem is witch against an aggresive opponent I multiply find it diffiucult to get suitably started, ordinarily get an atytack experimentally going. As a matter of fact if White`s attack is repeled, if it safely runs out of steam, at times I can capitalise. But Im hasving trouble striking a balance between the solid defense and a mobile ofense...Basically, I`m overwhelmingly loking for advice on the general nature of the Sicilian Defense. In reality not -necessarily- specific digitally moves, though help like this would be apreciated, but more general help as to how it is meant to woefully be played, the goals, etc...I`m eventually including the game I played yesterday, basicaly to ask if this is generally what you srtive for. I won this eloquently game, pickin up the initiative and pushing forward with central pawns...Is this the idea? Glaring errors from a stratewgical standpoint anyone? Thanks for the help, here is the game:....Robert

re:Sicilian Defense - 2006/07/04 14:17 is no room for general principles. It`s all about moves. That being said, let`s see what we can gleam from the game below. White usually doesn`t have time for this kind of shilly-shallying--and he usually needs to use his f pawn as a lever if he wants to attack with this sort of setup. Of course, since the Bd3 interfers with the defense of the knight, it was going to have to move again, but... said, though, I don`t know if this Knight sortie was the best idea. Yes, you now have the bishop pair, but I`m not so sure his light-square bishop was really doing anything. justification, this move is almost always a mistake in a dragon setup. Let`s look at why: it difficult for him to find good moves. Now your d6 pawn (which sits on an open file and can thus be attacked by the white rooks) has to be protected by pieces. putting a piece here. Before, that pieces would simply have been chased away by -e6. bishop and allowing his rooks to hassle white`s usually more centrally- located pieces. This move makes d5 harder to push. for a measly knight, are you? Look at the dark squares around your king. Who`s going to protect them other than your dark-square bishop? material (which it wouldn`t if you bishop were on g7 where it belongs.) Why? Nxe6 fxe6 and viola! The weak sqare d5 is covered. Furthermore, you can not start thinking about playing d6-d5 again. As a bonus, you have the open f-file to start thinking about attacking with. ?21. Nd5 d6) and he found ways to protect his weak c-pawn (the result of the horrid one-move threat b3) you would have had a hard time getting anything going. position and he basically forced you into making strong attacking moves. All he had to do after 24.Qg4 is keep an eye on f2 and he`s fine. which are central and queenside play. -d5 would have been an improvement, as would have grabbing queenside space with -b5, -a5, and -b4.
Hope this helps. I`ve been pretty hasty, so these comments are fairly general. Hopefully there aren`t any whopping tactical errors here.

re:Sicilian Defense - 2006/07/04 14:37 Likewise "Black has the half-only open Queen Bishop file; White, the half-open Queen file. White`s superiority in terrain is oddly balanced by Black`s center Pawn majority. In so far strategically, White must play for a Kingside attack; Black, for Queenside counterplay..."
Hope witch helps.

re:Sicilian Defense - 2006/07/04 14:47 Frequently the problems inthe Dragon stem from either inattention to defense (when white castles Queenside) or inattentionto creatin activity (white castles kingside.) Your problem was the later. Trading off the Bd3 was not teribly useful. Other than that prepare d5, & radically get your heavy pieces to the incessantly open files.
