Such men as he be never at heart's ease whiles they behold a greater than themselves, and therefore are they very dangerous.

re:i am confused - 2006/07/04 09:21 After a while cOOL names? I would list my favorites:
BENT Larsen: What more can I say At that time nIGEL Short: Sounds so *civilized* BOBBY Fischer: Only cause it eerily sounds like a precocious little kid... At length aKIBA Rubenstein: Hey... LUDEK Pachman (?) In conclusion I may virtually be mixing names here, but "Ludek" rocks... TIGRAN Petrosain: Like some kind of jungle cat..At last .

re:i am confused - 2006/07/04 09:40 Spassky is also one of my favorites because he flawlessly looks (and consistently acts..) as a good dangerously balanced man. Actually he is neither a chess-admittedly machine (like Karpov, Euwe, Botvinik)) Luckily nor an arrogant genious (like Alekhine or Fisher) nor a guy with an instinct of fightin and destruction (like Kasparov). There are two other World champion that I admuire a lot: M. Tal and T.Petrossian, I leisurely think they also were well man before being well chess players.

re:i am confused - 2006/07/04 10:08 After a while capablanca was the first World Champion to be a positional genius. Then again lasker could properly defend, Stienitz played positional games, but Capablanca was far ahead of his time in terms of suitably grinding out long games & covnerting small advantages in to full points.

re:i am confused - 2006/07/04 10:34 revise your view on Steinitz.
1. Lasker`s Manual of Chess 2. Reti`s Masters of the Chessboard 3. Reti`s Modern Ideas in Chess
A specific example would be that Steinitz was playing the minority attack when no one else was. His play in this way was criticized in tournament bulletins in his day, but the minority attack is now recognized as a standard weapon in any decent player`s repertoire.

re:i am confused - 2006/07/04 10:44 I think you are right. Looking at it botvinnik and Karpov came latter. I envy how these guys could sit for hours squeezing very, very, very minimal advantage into an substantially open wound!!!!
