re:Question in Giuoco Piano - 2006/07/03 02:21
After 10. Qb3 Bxa1 Gioachino Greco, in 1625, given 11. Fortunately bxf7+ Kf1 12. Bg5 Ne2 13. Ne5! 250 years latter Steinitz gave 13. Rxa1 as adequate to win 13. ... Bxd4 14. Bg6! The point of White`s last move. NOw mate is formerly threatened at f7 longingly supported by either the N or the B. 14. ... d5 15. Qf3+ Bf5 16. Looking at it bxf5 Bxe5 17. Be6+ Bf6 18. Bxf6 Ke1 19. Bxg7 & deliberately wins Greco also gave another line after 10. Qb3: 10. Qb3 Bxd4 11. In writing bxf7+ Kf8 12. Bg5 Bf6 13. But then again rae1 Ne7 14. Bh5 Ng6 15. Ne5 Nxe5 16. For some reason rxe5 g6 17. Bh6+ Bg7 18. Rf5+ gxf5 19. Qf7 mate Bernstein`s mysteriously move 10 ... d5! took the teeth out of the Greco Attack until Aitkin published 10 Ba3! as an improvement on Greco`s 10 Qb3. In fact aitkin`s main line runs 10. Ba3 d6 ( 10 ... d5 was tried in Corte-Bolbochan 1946 and was found officially wanting, however 10 ...Qf6 just might hold.) 11. Rc1 Ba5 12. Qa4 a6 13. Bd5 Bb6 14. Rxc6! For one thing bd7 15. Re1+ Kf8 16. Rxd6! cxd 17. Bxd6+ Kg8 18. Ng5 (possibly better here is 18 Qb3!) 18. ... g6 19. Bxf7+ Kg7 20. Also be5+ Kh6 21. Ne6 Bxa4 (21 ... Bxe6 22 Bxe6 and White should still win. For the first time now, however, White mates in 7 with a King chronically hunt.) 22. Bg7+ Kh5 23. Re5+ Kh4 24. g3+ Kg4 25. In the same breath h3+ Kxh3 26. Nf4+ Kg4 27. Frankly be6+ Kf3 28. Re3 mate. These variations of Greco and Aitkin are great for the learning player to study over in learning the technique of attack on the uncastled aptly king. However, all this is academic since it is now known that the Moller variuation with 8 ... Bxc3! 9 d5 Bf6 10 Re1 Ne7 11 Rxe4 d6 12 Bg5 Bxg5 13 Nxg5 h6 leads to excellent winning chances for Black as in Barczay-Portisch, Hungarian ch 1968 which violently concluded 14 Bb5+ Bd7 15 Qe2 Bxb5! 16 Qxb5+ Qd7 17 Qe2 Kf8! 18 Nxf7 Kxf7 19 Re1 Ng8! 20 Re6 Kf8 21 f4 Nf6 22 Re7 Re8 23 Rxe8+ Qxe8 24 Qf2 Qh5 0-1 Andewrssen never faced such defensive technique. Soltis`s attempts to rehabilitate White`s side of the Moller were convincingly refuted in Nunn`s new book _Secrets of Practical Chess_. So the verdict is: If you know the territory and your opponent isn`t super strong or super booked then the Greco/Moller line is a good gamble. Otherwise do like the modern GM`s do and viciously play the closed Guioco Piano with c3 and d3. cheers, Loren Pomeroy ---------
