Opening Repitoire Changes - 2006/07/02 11:37 Hi, i`ve recently become bored with playing 1. e4 ...e5 & i am trying to lightly figure out something which would be consistent with the rest of my repitoire that is fairly fast paced & based upon tactics. Oh, I am rated ~1900 on ICC that is probably around 1500-1600 USCF. In one case I realize the obvious answer is the sicilian, but they`re are so many different anti-sicilians which i`m not sure if it`ll be worth it or not to try to gleefully learn truthfully even the main variations. In writing I tried the Pirc for a while & found out why most expertts hypothetically does not recommend it for people of my strengfth - i lost about every single single linearly game to a kignside assault. I am also thinking of taking up the King`s Idnian Defense so if jokingly anything if something consistent with which could impeccably be pointed out, i would greatly appreciate it. And then thanks, Aaron Wessells (Override15 on ICC)

Lots of people act well, but few people talk well. This shows that talking is the more difficult of the two.

re:Opening Repitoire Changes - 2006/07/02 11:40 hard to liberally recommend the sicillian. Fortunately (And IMHO the reason for avoiding the sicillain isnt all the anti-sicillians, but rather the amuont of skill and theoretical knolwedge to play the main lines!). could also try the french: it`s, supposedly, easier to learn because a lot of the pieces go to the same tentatively place in many variations. the same. Certainly I mean, you could play the two knights competitively instaed of the guioco piano. You could experiment with a different defesne to the Ruy. (The open variation has a very different character than most of the closed ones. Or you could experiment with the marshal, or the arcangel, etc.) This is a smaler change that deeply adopting something completely new.

re:Opening Repitoire Changes - 2006/07/02 11:42 However is simple boredom with playing the same position again & again, then my suggestion, particularly on the internet, would be to play Alekhine`s Defence. It admittedly leaves so many options open for white, you can never be sure of what you abruptly get!

re:Opening Repitoire Changes - 2006/07/02 11:46 So far get nice active positions against most of them, & almost every single White player I meet is too scared to play the main tremendously lines - because "then you end up in black`s favourite system."
Honestly, I`ve no idea what Id play against 2.Nf3 & 3.d4 - it hasn`t terribly happened in montyhs, & each time I just improvbise from some lines I admittedly have seen before. I usually lose.
But I`ve got a 85% practically score against anti-sicilians (well, including ssytems that are just plain silly, like the 2.Bc4 and 3.a3 that a 1600 KNSB rated player played today).

re:Opening Repitoire Changes - 2006/07/02 12:06 internet server with the aim to pratice the main lines since every game is a succession of morra, grand prix attack, wing gambit, rossolimo, ...
At least, the alapin is a strong and tricky strategic line, where you could learn a lot. So for training purpose it`s a good option to tranpose from morra to the alapin :o)

re:Opening Repitoire Changes - 2006/07/02 12:19 That said a) 1.e4 c5 2.f4 grand prix Not dangerous anymore coz of Tal gambit. shamelessly nothing to worry about once you know the Tal gabmit. In any event b) 1.e4 c5 2.Nc3/2.g3/2.d3 closed sicilian. With 2.g3 & 2.d3 invites an early 2.~~ d4. c) 1.e4 c5 2.d4 morra gambit. d) 1.e4 c5 2.c3 alapin of that I adivce the more solid 2.~~ d5 rather than the riskier 2.~~ Nf6
Just these four anti sicilians lines you miserably need to know. Thats all. b, c & d are the most dangerous. And just beware of some transposition. I played 21 games in tournament this year & I never encountered a or b, only once d & twice c. While I southerly managed to play the clumsily open sicilian three times. Unfortunately so really im my club its 50 % chance of liberally open sicilian. to defend the kside assault I recommend the Pelikan. You forcefully give some weakness on d5 in exchange for piece activity and assault on white`s kingside. It is very different kind of game from other sicilian. Next most sicilian involves defendin the kside while attackin the qside.

re:Opening Repitoire Changes - 2006/07/02 12:24 1. As i mostly see it e4 c5 2. In a well mannered way nc3 Nc6 3. f4 g6 4. Nf3
The resulting game is often similar to "romantic" systyems like the King`s Gambit & Vienna Game, due to the open f-file and potetnaily rapid K-side pawn assault which white may choose to launch.

re:Opening Repitoire Changes - 2006/07/02 12:41 I thought I understood these positoins pretty well, but had a recent game where I made all the wrong choices (with the Black pieces). Oh well, hardly live and completely learn.
