Super-knights should be legal!!! - 2006/07/02 11:12
it would actually prove weaker than the standard Knight. The reason is that that it has the main weakness of the Bishop: it only has access to half the squares of the board, namely those of one color. Like the Knight, the "super-knight" controls at most 8 squares, less as it moves away from the center (and unlike the Knight, the "super-knight" already runs into the edge of the board when it`s on the c- or f-files or the 3rd or 6th rank). So it seems weaker than both minor pieces, though of course one may contrive specific positions in which the 3-1 leaper is stronger than a 2-1, and the unwary opponent may fall into novel fool`s mates such as 1.SNa4 g6?? 2.SNd5#. ---------
I will permit no man to narrow and degrade my soul by making me hate him.
