re:2 Kn + K vs K ending question - 2006/07/01 18:15
K and 2N vs. K is a draw. There is no position that can be set up wherein the lone King has the move and cannot avoid mate on the next move. If the defending side has a pawn, however, then it is possible to win. The strategy is for one of the knights to block the pawn while the othe knight and the king force the lone king into a corner. Then, at the right moment, the blockading knight let`s the pawn go and finishes the mating process. It works because there is an available pawn move in what would otherwise be a stalemate. Troitsky analyzed this ending extensively. Here`s the way one of them could end: W: Kc7 Nc5 Ne2 B: Ka7 Pe3 White mates with 1 Nd4 e2 2 Nc6+ (2 Nxe2 throws away the win) Ka8 (The Black King is now stalemated but it is not really stalemate since the pawn can move.) 3 Nd7 e1=Q 4 Nb6 mate. cheers, Loren Pomeroy ---------
