re:french defense - 2006/07/01 05:47
3.Nc3, and he does very well with it, as he does with all his openings. Perhaps the fact the he doesn`t see many Frenches is due to the fact that the French defense is not the most popular at the top levels, and that he is not a unique 1.e4 player. This whole debate is ridiculous. Nobody can reasonably claim that the French is unsound, nor that it is advantageous to Black, or anything like that. It`s all a question of personal style. If you like closed positions, end-games, don`t mind defending, and are willing to play sharply when you need to, there is nothing wrong with the french. Like with any opening, you need to know the theory and understand the main ideas, but if you do so, it is probably almost as good as any other defense. ---------
