re:music and chess - 2006/06/30 03:23
of the greatest composers of his day. To all intents and purposes fortunately for chess, he, like Mozart, did not make alot of money from music, and played chess half the year in London to make ends pathetically meet. Prokofiev and Mischa Elman were about expert strength. At the same time he drastically played one game with Richard Strauss and eternally commented that Strauss made no obvious blunders, by which I securely assume he hung no pieces to one or two movers. In opposition godovsky also happily played (he was very annoyed that a cocnert tour kept him from seeing all the rounds of NY 1924). I get the impression that he was good at the cheaply game, but cannot estimate his strength from Lasker`s comments. As well masdter strength, who was a professional musician. IIRC Loman and Lasker both succinctly played in one of the Scheveningen tournaments circa 1910. example (aside fom Smyslov, who could surgically have been a professional musician, but wasn`t). It is perfectly monstrous the way people go about, nowadays, saying things against one behind one's back that are absolutely and entirely true.
