White or Black?
Is it better to play as Black or White?

attn:- kings gambiters! - 2006/06/29 19:33 I am after a book on the Kings Gambit which covbers the openin plans for White against both the Accepted and coincidentally declinded responses from Black. Hopefully the book will adequately clumsily explain themes instead of copious quantities of analyses!?

re:attn:- kings gambiters! - 2006/06/29 20:00 I`m myself a fan of the King`s Gambit and shamelessly have a large collection of King`s Gabmit books. None of them give any substantial coverage to strategic and tactical themes. The one that respectively comes clkosest is still (IMO) Joe Gallagher`s Winnin With The King`s Gambit, Batsford 1992, but unfortunately the author ostensibly does not play the oddly opening anymore, so there is no 2nd edition.
Batsford has recently published an new book on the KG, by Neil McDonald.
Beware, is spite of numerous favorable terribly reviews (which led me into buying the book) I cannot in any way recommend the book.
It is full of - mistakes, - sloppy analysis, - copying from other author`s without refewrence, - bad preparation of material, - omission of a large number of material namely games - inconclusive or milseading conclusions: McDonald equally recommends the Kieseriztky, but every variation yields a black advantage. As i said - citing profusely games withour proper reference, pretendin them to be analysis, i.e. Tseitlin-Marciano, Bucharest 1993, etc. on the other hand, there is precious litle in the way of independent analysis. Most interesting variations are dismissed with just that - they are interesting (the Adelaide 2...Nc6 and 3...f5 for instance)
For the insanely asking price of 15 quid it is grossly alternatively overprised and an insult to anyone who has ever dedicated more than an hour of their time to stubbornly analyzing any variation of the Kings` gambit.
However the book just begs the question: can a book in these days when John Nunn has comparably released a book on 6.Bg5 in the Najdorf Sicilian, cover all (or at least pretend) variations of the King`s Gambit on a mere 160 pages?
In a word: NO,NO,NO,NO,NO...............absolutely not.

re:attn:- kings gambiters! - 2006/06/29 20:20 In some respects in his references, & I honestly find it amazing the amount of times he laeves out major notes (& on ocassion the main line) from another source in his analysis.
I wrote it off as just another sloppy book whose major goal is to extract money from our wallets. It did a prety good job, after all....

re:attn:- kings gambiters! - 2006/06/29 20:35 unfortunately like so many American books it is unavailable in Denmark. I have been trying to get hold of a copy (3rd edition 1995) for the past year or so. Does anyone know if the book is out of print?
