re:Sicilian players on the anti-Sicilian lines - 2006/06/29 16:44
I don`t know. There have been several well0reviewed books lately which have dealt with anti-sicillian lines: Silman`s "Wiinning wiith the sicillian", Gallagher`s "Beating the Anti-Sicillians" and perhaps a few more. I don`t know any sicillian player who hasn`t taken some time ot look up the smith-morra. to adopt a dubious or questionable gambit in. After all, in most variations, it seems like white gets a strong attack out of the opening, and it`s black who has to walk a tightrope if he wants to survive into the middlegame. (Of course, if he does so, white may be in trouble.) At the club level, where defensive technique is poor, it strikes me as near-suicide to play the ultra-sharp lines of the najdorf... for his rook, but so what? (It`s not like he has a hard time finding squares for his rooks in the main line.) After 1.e4 c4 2.b4 cb 3.a3 d5 e5!? it seems like black just has to develop his light-square bishop, and play e6 and then f6. White`s advantage here, such as it is, seems to be his pawn on e5, but there are lots of openings where black voluntarily accepts a pawn on e5 (open Spanish, French, etc.) so it doesn`t seem like that much to worry about. As for the wing gambit, ---------
Parting is such sweet sorrow.
