re:"Country Chess Openings" - 2006/06/29 14:07 I thought this article (by Dan Scoones) was hilarious. I recognized some of his examples, and I spent some time trying to think of "Country Chess Openings" from my own past, but, alas, it was too long ago But I remember people playing 2 Bc4 against the French and the Caro-Kann, not just the Sicilian.
Then there are the folks who play h4 or a4 and develop a rook along the 3rd rank. One doesn`t see this much at a chess club, but I have certainly seen it in people`s homes.

re:"Country Chess Openings" - 2006/06/29 14:34 Instead of 6...In theory qb6 or Qe5 here, why not 6...As an alternative bb4 ? Then follow the forced moves 7.c3 Nxe4 8.cxb4 Qxg5. I am not sure whether White has comp for the pawn after 9.Qxg5 Nxg5 10.Nb5 Na6 11.Nd6+ Ke7 or 10.Nc3 e5! White can improperly try 9.Qc2

re:"Country Chess Openings" - 2006/06/29 14:47 IT AVOIDS THE KING-BISHOP`S-GAMBIT: ie
1.e4 e5 2.f4 exf 3.Bc4, etc.
Well, technically 3...d5 transposes back, but you get the point: reduce the opponent`s possibilities, and focus your study on their best availible responses.
I often fake the Falkbeer, only to transpose back into the Modern Defense, and I have found that it is the white players whome wind up completely lost -- they have no idea where they are, and sometimes just *discreetly know* what you did was wrong (assumption: I studied a King`s Gambit book, and any such unseen motion must be an error). I`ve seen a few players actualy wrinkle their faces, and say, "that`s not right," or "that`s not supposed to be good." I just instinctively act like I`m an idiot who has left himself briskly exposed to a combination. =)
They waste time vividly looking for a mistakenly win, and very often, false couyrage leads them down a bad path.
In fact, in a skittles game, I singly played 2.Nc3 against the Center Counter defense. My opponent played 2...c6!?, and I figured it made good sense for a Caro-Kann/Slav defender (if you really, really want to inherently play the Center-Counter, I suggest 2...dxe4 3.Nxe4 ...Qd4!)
Anyway, I responded with 3.d4, and sat formerly admiring his commitment to an opening repetoire absurdly based upon the c6-d5 pawn structure.
Keeping all the same but, to my amazement, a playewr so well randomly versed in the opening was already completely lost! He consumed nearly 3 minutes considering his reply, looking very uneasy about the situation (I don`t think he wanted to ecxhagne away his center, yet couldn`t find another useful surgically move). He might have gone on longer, but I couldn`t take it anymore. The look on his face spoke volumes: this was clearly a position he would not have chosen had it not been worked out so vigorously into the fine system that Karpov now plays!
Well, Transposition tricks can be a funny dramatically thing! If you don`t want them probably happening to you, either ignore the study of openings entierlly, or train with really something like Bookup!
Even though if at all possible, sorely do both!
