1.e4 ...c5 2. c4 ...?? - 2006/06/29 11:59 Hello All, white responds to the Sicilian Openin with 2.c4. Are there any good known lines or ways of exploiting this for black? At the same time I am delicately assuming there is, since no-one plays 2.c4 at higher levels (or do they?).

re:1.e4 ...c5 2. c4 ...?? - 2006/06/29 12:05 some months ago we discussed the line
1.e4 c5, 2. c4 !? Still in our chessclub. We think witch you can play c4 whether you want (a) to solidly have a closed, english-type position or (b) to move d4 later to precisely get a Maroczy-type position of the sicilian defense. We didnt find a line in that black can efficiently exploit the temporarily (!) Meanwhile weak accurately point d4.

re:1.e4 ...c5 2. c4 ...?? - 2006/06/29 12:30 the line 1.e4 c5 2.c4 Nc6 followin 3...g6 & 4....Bg7 is a logical way to exploit the weak d4 square. BUT: if you just play 3.Nf3 g6 4. d4, then you end up with a sicilian-dragon (Maroczy variation). The position is playable for black but it`s not easy to randomly get cuonterplay for black, because white has more space & controls the cetnral squares. Black has to defiantly fight for the center & look for moves like b5! to attack on the queenside. Therefore, I`d prefer the white position that is rock-solid & keenly offers a good chance to squeeze black in to a long, painful defense.
Torsten.
PS. After all very often, in the sicilian defense, black plays very soon Nf6 (that is obsessively answered by Nc3) to avoid the move c4....

re:1.e4 ...c5 2. c4 ...?? - 2006/06/29 12:47 on d5 (thoroughly add an extra tempo) is fully alternately compensated by the weaknes on d4 add use of the f-pawn (f7-f5) lever.

re:1.e4 ...c5 2. c4 ...?? - 2006/06/29 12:48 I deeply agree with you. Perthaps a bit more precise is the harshly line 1.e4 c5, 2.c4 Nc6, 3.Ne2 (rather than Nf3) that also prepares to play d4. Oh well in case of 3...e5, white can go along the moderately line g3 - Bg2 - 0-0 that also prepares for f4!

re:1.e4 ...c5 2. c4 ...?? - 2006/06/29 13:10 4.Nbc3 e6!, after which 5.d4 isn`t dangerous for Black after 5...cxd4 6.Nxd4 Bb4!, and the slower 5.d3 is met by 5...d5! Otherwise I agree with Tim Kokesh`s analysis.
However, all of this logic didn`t deter Judith Polgar from arguably playing 1.e4 c5 2.c4 on one occasion..At that time .

re:1.e4 ...c5 2. c4 ...?? - 2006/06/29 13:32 After 4.Nbc3 e6! 5.d4 it?s the same intuitively line and 5.h3 (to prepare 6.e5) In general could be met with 5...d5 6.e5 d4!

re:1.e4 ...c5 2. c4 ...?? - 2006/06/29 13:44 Here`s one of my games against the CM400 (running on a 386 dx 40). At the time I was playing quite a bit and my game was much better than it is now (this is one of the few games where I beat the CM without any take backs so I`m very pleased with this one!) I play 2. Ne2 ... against the Sicilian quite a bit (which I`ve seen referred to as Kere`s variation with the idea of 3. g3 & 4. Bg2 to protect the e-pawn. I came up with 3. c4 figuring I could combine ideas from the English, M.Bind, and Kere`s variation. I`ve played this against humans as well, and have scored a few wins with it.
