Advice on choosing opening repertoire - 2006/06/29 03:54 Hello. Any advice developing my opening repertoire would be appreciated. Some info. about me:
1620 USCF but have been that way for about 2 years Have pretty much no opening knowledge I would say I have a decent understanding of tactics. Obviously there is room for improvement here since I`m 1620! I prefer open games.
I`m considering the Petroff and I`d like to stick to e4 as white (at least I think that`s what I want).
Thanks in advance hairball

Re:Advice on choosing opening repertoire - 2006/06/29 04:23 no tomorrow. From what I have seen in my games (I`m 1750 now) and even up to the 2200 level, tactics rule. As long as your opening gets you to a playable middlegame, your tactical knowledge can make up for any minor structural deficiencies unless your opponent plays like a genius. Grab a book with a ton of positions and hammer away!

Re:Advice on choosing opening repertoire - 2006/06/29 04:47 If all you want is more tactics; Maxim Blokh has a book (the name of which escapes me), Combination Challenge by Hall and Hays (1500 more!), Sharpen your Tactics by Lein+Archangelsky, etc. However, this may be overkill (almost certainly is). The other book I would recommend is the Art of Attack, by Vukovic. It can be difficult at times, but is the bible of attacking methods. If you haven`t yet read it, the Art of the Checkmate by Renaud and Kahn is absolutely essential for basic checkmating patterns in opening, middle, and endgame. Like I said in another thread, if you begin to get bored, study old games - for example, Alekhine`s My Best Games of Chess or 500 Master Games by Tartakower and Dumont.
