Bishop and Knight vs lone king - 2006/06/28 22:40 Is there someone out there in cyberspace that has this on paper, (so to speak)? If so, could you send me a copy? Thanks Tim

Re:Bishop and Knight vs lone king - 2006/06/28 22:50 A nice explanation is in Tarrasch`s THE GAME OF CHESS (available from Dover). The single trickiest part seems to be positions like Now you want to keep the king away from g8. Play Bh7, not Nh6. Tarrasch says that the knight moves along the path f7-e5-d7-c5-b7 while the king is being forced to the a8 corner. In some variations, the black king escapes the edge of the board, but only temporarily.

I believe one of the reasons so many do not get a higher education is the fear of their parents that they will lose more morally than they will receive mentally.

Re:Bishop and Knight vs lone king - 2007/05/05 18:12 this is how I learned to mate with king and bishop and knight vs a lone king. Right now I can do it against Chessmaster 9000 on its drill everytime provided I dont make any careless mistakes and I can do it on www.chessmagnetschool.com's toolbox. I will admit I cannot tell you all the nuances.

A friend from my MSN Messsenger list gave me the link http://www.exeterchessclub.org.uk/Endings/matekbnk.htm

What I did was basically learned two patterns were the king was on the opposite color of the bishop to bring over to the corner of the same color bishop. What I did was I inputted the moves list in Chessmaster 9000 and I tried to memorize them and see it visually a number of times. Than I try to play it with Chessmaster 9000.

1st pattern the king does not try to move out of its rank and just tries to move to the opposite color of bishop square and this is the easier pattern. Now the 2nd pattern is when the king tries to run out of its rank. This would have scared me if I did not learn the pattern. If you learn this pattern than you will know how to beat Chessmaster 9000 and practice checkmate at www.Chessmagnetschool.com. I wanted to also let you know that I dont promote this site at www.chessmagnetschool.com, I am only telling you because their Chess Toolbox is free to use.

I hope this helps. I realize I did not give you a diagram or nothing. But if you input the move list from http://www.exeterchessclub.org.uk/Endings/matekbnk.htm or from an endings book that has the list of moves for two patterns to this ending, you will get the hang of it.

Re:Bishop and Knight vs lone king - 2007/05/06 16:51 Most chess teaching books explain B, N, K vs K endings.
Although it never happens in real play, it is necessary to know.
The rule is: You trap the King onto the end squares of the board. The squares which are the same color as the Bishop. H1 or A8. Or A1 and h8.
(Dependent on the color of the Bishop).
See in particular books by Mason, and Edward Lasker.
