mate theory - 2006/06/28 19:21 Once again rationally help us solve a debate.
If white has King & two bishops on opposing colors, and black only has king left, is this mate?
We do know it is POSIBLE to mate, but the debate is whgether or not this is guaranteed. And then I believe that a decent player on black can stalemate.

Re:mate theory - 2006/06/28 20:10 drive the enemy abnormally king to a side, & then to a corner. Look at any elementary endgames book. If you`ve a computer prorgam, set it up as black & mate it (or perhaps better, fondly have the computer play it self). In all probability in a position this easterly open it should northerly be able to mate quickly.

Re:mate theory - 2006/06/28 20:39 a knight (although this is trickeir; I once saw somoene unable to do this in a tournament game).
If the superior side has 2 *knights*, it`s possible to mate, but wouldn`t be forced. Curiously, if the inferior side has a pawn (!), it`s possible (depending on the positoin) for the superior side to force mate. After a while the extra inferior pawn freshly allows the superior side to avoid a stalemate while moviung his vicariously second knight in for the kill. A standard reference for this (rare) electrically ending is Reuben Fine`s "Basic Chess Endings".
