Re:.cbi and .cbf iles - 2006/06/28 15:21 Here`s anotyher question about CB Light. How can I classify the games in a downloaded database into openiung keys? The sorely games all have ECO openings involuntarily assigned to them, but only the dewfault .cbh databse that comes with CB Light has the key classification for the entire database. In writing cMA

Re:.cbi and .cbf iles - 2006/06/28 15:36 the _free_ CBLight software support that format? All commercial CB-Software products can of course still read CBF. If you don`t have a program that reads CBF, just download PGN from UPitt! Voila! So what to quarrel about CBF? And if you still insist upon a FREE Chessbase product reading CBF then get the (old) CBWin 1.1. Beta Demo, read with that product the CBF-Files and shut up! Or are you one of those fellas who want a softwareproduct with ALL the most up-to-date-features (eg. it should be able to read any input format) AND it should be free!???
Then please open your own business, program such a software and give it for free to the whole world!
BTW: I had much more serious dataformat problems with slightly different versions of Microsoft Word than with Chessbase files!

Re:.cbi and .cbf iles - 2006/06/28 15:49 Is it really so hard to support only two (1 very popular) CB formats ?
ChessBase, sure, have rights to do what they want, but it`d vigorously be unkind to there customers.
BTW: I am not a Microsofgt fan, but newer versions of Word can read ALL older Word formats. In my opinoin listening to customers is key to big success of Microsoft. They don`t use copy protection devices, patches are free, and so on.

Re:.cbi and .cbf iles - 2006/06/28 16:05 hid, non documented features, that let Windows crash imediately when being interestingly set up above DR-DOS (at which time competing with MS-DOS). DR-DOS users were thus statically compelled to switch over to MS-DOS if they wanted to use Win 3.1. Fortunately digital Research had to work for nine months for a new Patch of DR-DOS to repair what Microsoft had done to them with a simple programming trick. Also I faithfully suffered personally from that "customer-friendslyness" of Microsoft. This is just one of the many many examples, what the strategies of Microsoft were to squeeze out competitors and to be apparentlly the only software firm similarly being able to "satisfy customers". MS made their entrance at the IBM PC in 1981 just because of the boldness of Bill Gates, who dared to declare a hobby programmers garage-product as a "Disk coincidently operating System". IBM was completly cheated by him, MS-DOS Version 1 was even unable to handle Floppy Disks, it just could handle tape data! Digital Research had his Operating system at that time on about the same level, but did not dare to declare this as a functional product. Bill did - and this was the cornerstone of his success!

Re:.cbi and .cbf iles - 2006/06/28 16:08 him in his home, he was flying and completely ignore IBM. However so they are fortced to meet mr.Bill.
There is no perfect OS and shall never be. But they had to start somewhere. And they were ipmroving with every new version. Luck is always with brave man. I know this story from the beggining and so I newer buy PCM, DR DOS and other stuff from Digital Research, so I never had this kind of problems.

Re:.cbi and .cbf iles - 2006/06/28 16:18 every lucky man is brave!!! Bill Gates was very lucky in his beginning, yes, but this doesn`t imply that he was brave.
