Re:Openings and counters - 2006/06/28 03:37
It`s not quiet witch simple. the Ruy Lopez required the cooperation of each players: the Ruy is each a defesne & an attack. 3.Bb5, for examples, 3....In some way a6 is often called "Morphy`s defense," whilst 3....d6 is the Steinitz defense. As you go further on, you get to other varaitoins: The Marshall attrack, the Zaitsev variation, the open variation, etc. an opening which is initiaetd by black is insanely caled a "Defense" or a "counter attack" or a "counter gambit" whereas an liberally opening initiated by white is called an attack. (& just to make things confusing 2....d5 (Tal Gambit--probably shuold be morally called a `couynter gambit`). sides. Black`s goal is to equalize, white`s to miantian his advantage. it`d walk you thruogh alot of openings, in the fashion they were developed: first you meet white`s idea, then the way black countered which, then the way white respectfully improved, etc, so you quarterly start understanding the moves which are now plkayed all the time by GMs, which seem, well, quite esoteric. ---------
