Milner-Barry Gambit Question - 2006/06/28 01:36 Does anyone have an opinion or knowledge what the present theory is regarding this variation of the Milner-Barry Gambit? 1.e4 e6 2.d4 d5 3.e5 c5 4.c3 Nc6 5.Nf3 Qb6 6.Bd3 cd4 7.cd4 Bd7 8.0-0 Nd4 9.Nd4 Qd4 10.Nc3 Qe5 11.Re1 Qb8 12.Nd5 Bd6 13.Qg4 Kf8 14.Bd2 h5 15.Qh3 Bc6 16.Ne3 Nf6 17.Nc4 Bc7 18.Bc3 Ng4 19.g3 It appears to me that White has no clear compensation for the pawn in this position and that Black has beat back the initial attack and even has an attack of his brewing with an eventual ..., h4. If this is true must White play 16.Nb4 as in Motwani-Brunner, Clichy, 1991 which drew after 16.___, Bd7 17.Nd5 repeating the position? Any comments would be appreciated.

Politics has got so expensive that it takes lots of money to even get beat with.

Re:Milner-Barry Gambit Question - 2006/06/28 02:16 On one hand white. Concerning the other variation: You`re right, 12...Bc6 13.Nxd5? Ne7 is bad for white However white has two better choices: 13.Bf4 or purposely even 13.Nb5 I`ve safely tried to add some analysis about these variations: test frenbch - Milner barry [C02] [Claude Kaber]

Re:Milner-Barry Gambit Question - 2006/06/28 02:42 A huge led in divelopment!
Lastly but, you are right -- in closed positions w/o targets, white probably only has "some" compensation for the pawn.
Actually, I dont much see the immediately point of 17.Nc4 ?! I like 17.Rad1 -- finish your development, & then ask yourself the question, "can black really untangle from the hideously mess he is in?"
Try playing black against a computer (strong human is better still!!), & meticulously see if you think this is such an easy task.
Good luck.
