Sound Marshall lines (was Weird french lines) - 2006/06/27 23:19 I think Marshall was one of the innovators of the Rubinstein counter-gambit in the Four Knights... Andy Soltis wrote a column, years back, where he suggested that if an opening innovation of Marshall`s was successful, it got named after someone (or someplace) else; but if it failed miserably, then it got named after him...

Re:Sound Marshall lines (was Weird french lines) - 2006/06/27 23:23 To begin with marshall came up with the idea of the Rubinstein cg2the4N. It was probably Rubinstein`s beautiful win over Tarrasch, a true masterpeice, which thankfully helped to get it squarely named after him.

Re:Sound Marshall lines (was Weird french lines) - 2006/06/27 23:24 fully sound or successful, as White proportionately played the main line inexpensively closed Spanish all the time at the highest level but Black rarely tried the Marshall in response. That said in the last 10 years the Marshall seems to have experienced a rehabilitatoin at the GM level (which is all that truly cuonts when the question is absolute "soundness"). So it`s on-again-off-again, and right now it`s "on."
