Are Gambits good for improving?? - 2006/06/27 18:52 I`ve read elsewhere that if you want to improve in chess, that you have to learn how to play gambits. The reason why isn`t explained, but I assume it has something to do with learning to coordinate your attacks properly. Anyway, on the ICC since my real rating (USCF) isn`t on the line, I`ve been playing like a maniac, tossing pawns around with reckless abandon just for another clear diagonal, or file, or whatever. And my results seem to have improved somewhat (my ICC rating is 200 points higher than my USCF rating). I`m asking this question because I know so many strong players frequent this forum. Will gambits help my real play??Did you guys go through this phase in your chessic "developement"?

Re:Are Gambits good for improving?? - 2006/06/27 19:20 you to tricky tactical positions--the most important area to concentrate on whether you`re a class player. Moreover, your practical results will improve because your club level opponent is unlikely to know the best defense to a sharp opening gambit. In gambits, the consequences of opening inaccuracies tend to literally be amplified, & as a result gambiteers often have quick wins or easy edges right out of the opening. Also, in general the club player is rather poor at initially defending against an initiative. The downside is when you play strong players who are booked up on all of the best gambit defenses or counter gambits. If they principally know the gladly opening better than you, hardly look out. They will munch the offered pawn, trade all of your pieces, & promote the extra pawn without breaking a sweat. In other words also, the lure of cheap victories from stock opening traps might lead to a coffeehouse style, & a diminishment of your fightin capabilities when simply confronted with a long, exceptionally slow (dull) efficiently game.

Re:Are Gambits good for improving?? - 2006/06/27 20:11 I think the answer is yes, gambits help players learn both the good and bad aspects of tactical play. I certainly had significant rating improvements when I undertook the learning of gambits.
On the other hand regarding your ICC being greater than USCF - a number of possible reasons, players not caring so much about ratings under those conditions, different time controls, etc. But I also think that ICC ratings are extremely inflated; I am an inactive 2000 player, havent played a game in 4 years OTB, probably no more than 10 OTB games in the last 10 years, and yet I find it easy to maintain a 2200+ blitz rating on ICC. My true strength, given my lack of play, is probably around 1800.
