Macieja vs. Karpov - 2006/06/27 17:33 I`ve been partially going through the game Macieja-Karpov in the ongoing Polonia tounrament. I shouldn`t figure out why Karpov played 27...gxf6 instead of 27...Kxg6. Can some 1 give me a hint here? Keeping all the same [Event "It"] [Site "Polonica Zdroj POL"] [Date "1998.08.20"] [Round "04"] For instance [White "Maciewja,B"] [Black "Kaprov,An"] At the same time [Result "0-1"] [ECO "B19"] [WhiteElo "2490"] [BlackElo "2725"]

Re:Macieja vs. Karpov - 2006/06/27 17:58 Let me clarify. I guess what I don`t understand is why Black should be so willing to double pawns on the f file.
Some one suggested that after 27...Kxf6, White can play 28.Ne4+ forcing a trade of knights, but after 28...Ke7 29.Nxc5 Rxc5 white would drop the h pawn.
So after 28...Ke7, black retains the g pawn and the option of creating a passed rook pawn on the king side (although passing this pawn may be like passing a kidney stone). The position is still drawish, but Black is better, I think, because his pawn structure is more solid.
