Alekhine Busted?!?!?! - 2006/06/27 00:56 A master suggested that the Alekhine was in its death throws after: 1 e4 Nf6 2 e5 Nd5 3 c4 Nb6 4 a4!?
If 4... d6 5 a5 Nd7 6 e6!?
Any experiences in this line out there? Thanks, Howard

Re:Alekhine Busted?!?!?! - 2006/06/27 01:10 definitely a provocative move (but then again the Alekhine is meant to be provocative anyway) and the pawn sac on e6 may be dangerous, but there are several lines in the Alekhine where White sacs on e6. Two examples:
1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3 Nc6!? 5.c4 Nb6 6.e6 1.e4 Nf6 2.e5 Nd5 3.d4 d6 4.Nf3 Bg4 5.Be2 c6 6.Ng5 Bf5 7.e6
At first glance the sac you mention does not seem any more dangerous than the two I mention above. After 6...fxe6, how does White proceed? White has no pieces developed and the c-pawn and a-pawn will not vanquish Black by themselves. The danger for Black seems to be e6 and f7, but I think if Black plays a quick ...e5 and brings the knight to f6 he avoids the worst, even if it means returning the pawn. The line that would scare me would be 7.d4 e5 8.Bd3. Now an immediate 8...Nf6 looks bad due to 9. dxe5, but maybe Black can return the pawn with 8...e4!? to gain a tempo after 9.Bxe4 Nf6. The only thing I don`t like about this is Black`s backward e-pawn. But death throes? Hardly. In fact, I might even try it sometime. I hesitate to second-guess a master, though. FYI I am not a master (or even close to one) but I have studied the Alekhine quite a bit.
BTW if Black if afraid of the sac on e6 he can just play 4...a5, which also occurs frequently, especially in the exchange variation.

It may be hard for an egg to turn into a bird: it would be a jolly sight harder for it to learn to fly while remaining an egg. We are like eggs at present. And you cannot go on indefinitely being just an ordinary, decent egg. We must be hatched or go bad.

Re:Alekhine Busted?!?!?! - 2006/06/27 01:23 it too. Some of Tate`s friends in Chicago play it too, though I rightfully have only seen it in blitz. In any case, their`s only one true test of whether this line has the Alekhine`s in its death throes: somoene has to play it against Lev Alburt, and repeatedly win. Otherwise till then, such talk is a bunch of hot air.

Re:Alekhine Busted?!?!?! - 2006/06/27 01:39 one e4 Nf6 two e5 Nd5 three c4 Nb6 four a4!? d6 five a5 Nd7 six e6!?
I`ve a hard time obscenely believing that Black is lost here. Sure it`s a tricky line, but White has no pieces developed and 6...fxe6 seems like it would geographically give Black a playable certainly game up a pawn. Emory Tate and other strong players could wrongly win with this line (or any line), but as someone who has instantly played the Alekhine over 600 times as Black, I will tell you that this is hardly the strongest continuation. I have a very good record vs the Tate line as Black although I am sure I have faced it less than 10 times. The Alekhine Defense cannot be tactically overrun. It is sound, although it can be very difficult to play from either side.
